    About Biodiversity Preservation Center (BPC)

Biodiversity Preservation Center (BPC), a Non- Governmental Organization (NGO), was established in 1996 and incorporated under the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria (CAC) since 2003, has been collaborating with identified communities and programs to stem the ugly trend of forest loss and encourage restoration. Selected communities that still have undestroyed natural forests have been identified and a number of targeted programs put in place with the aim of creating opportunities for the people to fully understand and appreciate the problems resulting from the habitat destruction. On the other hand, the people are empowered to participate in biodiversity preservation and at the same time given the right orientation on how to sustainably utilize NTFPs for their livelihood and economic needs.

BPC in its efforts to foster in-situ conservation in NIgeria have worked with multi-lateral agencies and governments to identify selected communities that still have remnant natural forests and endemic wildlife by anchoring targeted programs towards creating opportunities for the communities to fully understand and appreciate the benfits of biodiversity conservation and how it fosters sustainable development.

BPC operates another charity-NGO, namely: COMMUNITY RURAL EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME (CREP). The two Organizations work hand in hand. While BPC focuses on biodiversity aspects CREP’s empowerment activities are targeted at the affected rural communities to help cushion the effect of perceived income losses that go along with conservation initiatives. CREP was established essentially to empower rural communities located in areas of rich biodiversity so as to enlist their support in conservation efforts. This arrangement has gone down quite well with the communities as they are made to see the benefits directly.

    OUR CORE OBJECTIVES

    • To continue with on-going field biological researches aimed at collecting basic and comprehensive information and data on the status of the Nigerian biodiversity.
    • To investigate and document additional areas of potential threats to biodiversity conservation, with a view to identify gaps in knowledge, protection, and promoting specific conservation activities that may arise in the course of study.
    • To analyze patterns of human-behaviours, social relations and cultural preferences as these affect the Nigerian biodiversity and environment.
    • To stimulate debate and help intensify awareness in Nigeria through conservation education of environmental consequences of socio-economic activities, especially unsustainable bio-resources exploitation, habitat degradation and destruction.
    • To publish and place to the disposal of all relevant groups and government, information and perspectives which could assist in the formulation of policy for promoting and conserving the Nigerian bio-resources and environment.
    • To organize conferences, symposia, demonstrations lectures and take any other action and or steps which will facilitate the realization of the objectives stated above.

    ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR

Appropriate project sites and host communities have been identified and the necessary contacts made. Sensitization programs have been put in place in some of the selected communities. The response has been quite encouraging. The communities greatly appreciate the public enlightenment programs of BPC. This is evidenced by the way they now respond to conservation issues. Also preliminary field surveys have commenced in some of the areas. On the other hand, community empowerment and poverty reduction programs have also been identified within the affected communities under the CREP arm of the program.
