What do we want to accomplish?
The ultimate goal of UNDP is to improve the lives of the people of Nigeria, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, and to ensure a future that offers equality, dignity and opportunity for all. UNDP works in partnership with the federal Government of Nigeria, development partners, UN agencies, civil society and local communities to help identify local solutions to meet global and national development challenges through a range of interventions that combine UNDP’s expertise and comparative advantage in the areas of Governance & Peace Building, Inclusive growth and Sustainable Development.
What are our results?
UNDP led support in developing evidence-based systems for economic planning and development, in key areas like computation of States GDP, mainstreaming Human Development Studies in universities’ curricula, and aid coordination and alignment. The state GDP will provide quality information for state and local government interventions, and will positively impact on addressing regional variations. Support in the agricultural sector, particularly commodity value chain and direct marketing, is transforming the sector into high level production and commercialization, and deepening inclusive markets. With UNDP’s continued support in 2012, the government commenced the preparation of the second National Implementation Plan of the National Vision 20:2020.
UNDP supported the design of a long term Infrastructure and Social Sector Investment Action Plan for the Niger Delta to tackle the root causes of deprivation, poverty and unrest in the region. Additionally, the increased oil production, resulting from the region’s Amnesty programme translated to high oil revenue to invest for development. Efforts at peace consolidation in Jos, to Operations Rainbow (OR), helped strengthened alliance between civilian and security force and ethno-religious relations that helped reduce conflict even at the height of Boko Haram terrorist attacks. The installation of the SMS-based early warning system enhanced the rapid response of OR and citizens engagement and feedback system to the Jos peace and conflict process.
UNDP provided support to anti-corruption agencies for the conduct of corruption risk assessments in target MDG-related ministries at federal and selected states. UNDP support facilitated systematic and coordinated delivery of donor assistance, improving the quality and sustainability of results. Improved corruption risk assessment proffered recommendations to address vulnerable service delivery areas prone to corruption, wastages and the misappropriation of funds.
The UNDP/DGD contributed significantly to the remarkable success of 5 governorship elections held in 2012, further strengthened the electoral process. Support to the Independent National Electoral Commission ensured clearer strategic vision, plans and values to undertake its mandate of improving electoral processes.
Support to environment and sustainable development built stakeholders’ consensus around key issues and led to the approval of the Climate Change Policy and Response Strategy in 2012 and development of the National Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action for Climate Change.
The severe flooding in mid 2012, the worst in 50 years, affected 7.1 million people and claimed 436 lives in 31 out of the 36 States of Nigeria. The Government pledged 17.6 billion naira ($110 million) to mitigate the damage. UNDP supported the National Emergency Management Agency to conduct joint rapid emergency needs assessment and the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) with emphasis on economic, social and environmental effects of the floods. The PDNA will further inform policy decisions to facilitate early warning responses, relief and long-term recovery planning.
